Three Generations of Fishing
Dream Boat Fisheries Inc. was formed in 2016 by Laurie Pendleton, and Clinton Pendleton (son to Laurie). Prior to forming this company, Allison Pendleton (father to Laurie) started fishing when he was 14 years old with Payson Green (father in law to Allison). Payson transferred/sold his lobster license to Allison and years after, Allison (age 84 as of 2021) transferred this same license over to Laurie, whom both continue to fish this license to this day.
Homarus Americanus / Canadian Atlantic Lobster
The American Lobster, Homarus Americanus, is a species of lobster found on the Atlantic Coast of North America mainly between Labrador and New Jersey. It is also known as the northern lobster. It can reach a body length of 64 cm and can weigh over 20 kilograms. The closest relative to the Homarus Americanus is the Homarus Gammarus or the European Lobster. American lobsters are usually bluish green to brown with red spines.
Now the Eastern Canadian lobster (Homarus Americanus) are sought after by seafood lovers everywhere in the world due to how the cold water contributes to the quality of the meat, while their diet contributes to the flavour. Eastern Canadian lobsters have the largest average size at maturity due to the colder waters of their habitat.
These lobsters take on average 6-8 years to reach a legal catch size of one lb. At that size, they molt once a year. Larger lobsters molt only once every 3-4 years. Molting is the process that allows a lobster to grow. Before they shed the old shell, the lobster forms a thin one underneath. Once the old shell is discarded, the lobster is then called a new or soft-shell lobster. These new or soft shell lobsters unfortunately are not the best bang for the customers buck as they have the worst meat to shell ratio. The hard shelled lobster are the lobster that are most heavily sought after due to meat to shell ratio and for longer storage life in grocery stores, fish markets, and restaurants. Eastern Canadian lobster contains less saturated fat, calories, and cholesterol than beef, pork, or even the white meat of chicken. 100 grams of lobster (minus the butter!) only contains 90 calories!
Jonah Crab
Jonah Crab are one of the most undermarketed, underestimated, undervalued seafood in our fishing area of LFA 36. Reason being... During one of the many business trips we have taken to British Colombia we decided to learn a little bit about the high valued, high marketed, highly sought after Dungeness Crab (Metacarcinus Magister or Cancer Magister). With never seeing, shelling, or ever tasting one before, we were super excited to have the opportunity to buy some from a local fishermen. Our With our observation of the Dungeness crabs appearance, cooking process, shelling process, meat yield, and taste, we concluded that there is not much difference in value between the Dungeness Crab and our Jonah Crab. The biggest difference is marketing which brings the cost of the Dungeness Crab way higher than our Jonah Crab.
